10 Spurgeon Quotes for Dealing with Betrayal

On April 23, 1888, Charles Spurgeon was betrayed by his brother, James.

It all came to a head when Spurgeon withdrew his membership from the Baptist Union. Spurgeon lamented the absence of a confession of faith keeping Baptists from drifting away from evangelical doctrines. He feared the downgrading of theology would produce an “emptying of chapels, and the multiplication of spiders” (Autobiography 4:254).

Spurgeon’s withdrawal from the Baptist Union sparked the greatest controversy of his life – the “Downgrade Controversy.” He was opposed by many of his closest friends and students, including eighty alumni from his Pastors’ College.

“I cannot tell you by letter what I have endured in the desertion of my own men” (Letter to a friend, February 21, 1888).

“My heart has been ready to sink within me. . . . Friends have forsaken me” (Letter, An Exposition of Matthew, p. 274).

Yet Spurgeon felt a deeper dagger twist on April 23 when his own brother seconded the vote to censure him.

“I feel heart-broken. Certainly he has done the very opposite of what I should have done. Yet he is not to be blamed, for he followed his best judgment” (Fullerton, C. H. Spurgeon, p. 313-14).

“Reproaches from those who have been intimate with us, and trusted by us, cut us to the quick; and they are usually so well acquainted with our peculiar weaknesses that they know how to touch us where we are most sensitive, and to speak so as to do us most damage” (Treasury of David 3:19).

spurgeon-and-james“An unkind word from a stranger may have a very slight effect upon us; but if such a word should come from the lips of one whom we love, it would cut us to the quick. We could put up with a thousand things from those who are mere acquaintances; but from a beloved child, or from the wife of our bosom, such a thing would be very hard to bear” (MTP 52:86).

The Downgrade Controversy not only damaged the relationship between brothers, but it also compounded Charles’s failing health and resulted in his premature death at the age of 57.

“You will never see me again, this fight is killing me” (Letter to a friend, Autobiography 3:152).

For nearly 40 years, Spurgeon had preached the gospel in London – a gospel that centered on Jesus’s own betrayal by Judas and the other disciples.

Here are ten quotes from a man who had to preach that gospel to himself when he, too, felt the backstabbing ache of betrayal.

1.“I can bear anything for Jesus while His everlasting arms are underneath me.”

“When we are in a battle, we must expect calamities. . . . I can bear anything for Jesus while His everlasting arms are underneath me” (Autobiography 4:256).

2. “Every reputation that has been obscured by the clouds of reproach, for Christ’s sake, shall be rendered glorious.”

“There will be a resurrection of characters as well as of persons. Every reputation that has been obscured by the clouds of reproach, for Christ’s sake, shall be rendered glorious when the righteous shall ‘shine forth as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father’” (Autobiography 4:253).

3. “Let me be on my guard when the world puts on a loving face, for it will, if possible, betray me as it did my master, with a kiss.”

“Let me be on my guard when the world puts on a loving face, for it will, if possible, betray me as it did my Master, with a kiss. Whenever a man is about to stab religion, he usually professes very great reverence for it” (Morning and Evening, March 25, Morning).

4. “If you will trust yourselves with the Saviour, he cannot betray or deceive your trust.”

“If you will trust yourselves with the Saviour, he cannot betray or deceive your trust. . . . If we can trust him with our souls we have a hold upon him which he will not shake off, but he will bless us – yea, he will bless us eternally” (MTP 24:204).

5. “[Jesus] is a confidant who never can betray us, a friend who never will refuse us.”

“In all trouble send a message to Jesus, and do not keep your misery to yourself. In his case there is no need of reserve, there is no fear of his treating you with cold pride, or heartless indifference, or cruel treachery. He is a confidant who never can betray us, a friend who never will refuse us” (MTP 26:74).

6. “Oh, the joy of having Christ to go to!”

“Oh, the joy of having Christ to go to! All other friends will sometimes be unfriendly, and the best of them must part with you at your decease, or you with them when they depart out of this world unto the Father; but your Lord will never, never leave you, he will abide with you, and death shall only draw him nearer, for then you shall see his face, and his name shall be in your forehead, and you shall be with him where he is to behold his glory for ever and ever” (MTP 16:281).

7. “Confidence in man will betray your hopes, but faith in God will enrich you beyond your expectations.”

“It is frightfully easy for the heart to rely upon man, as we know right well! . . . [C]onfidence in man will betray your hopes, but faith in God will enrich you beyond your expectations. May our heart always keep to that – trusting God; trusting in God alone” (MTP 24:392).

8. “Be prepared for anything so long as you can stand fast by him who bought you with his precious blood.”

“Be ready for a bad name; be willing to be called a bigot; be prepared for loss of friendships; be prepared for anything so long as you can stand fast by him who bought you with his precious blood. . . . God give you courage, more and more of it, through faith in himself! May you be willing to put your religion to every proper test, the test of life, and the test of death, too!” (MTP 39:31)

9. “Let us not marvel when we are called to tread the road which is marked by his pierced feet.”

“Our blessed Lord had to endure at its worst the deceit and faithlessness of a favoured disciple; let us not marvel when we are called to tread the road which is marked by his pierced feet” (Treasury of David 3:19).

10. “Let us admire the superlative love of Jesus.”

“Now, then, what shall I say in conclusion, but just this: let us admire the superlative love of Jesus. O love, love, what hast thou done! What hast thou done! Thou art omnipotent in suffering. Few of us can bear pain, perhaps, fewer still of us can bear misrepresentation, slander, and ingratitude. These are horrible hornets which sting as with fire: men have been driven to madness by cruel scandals which have been distilled from venomous tongues. Christ throughout life, bore these and other sufferings. Let us love him, as we think of how much he must have loved us” (MTP 19:131).

For the Bible Tells Me So: Biblical Authority Denied … Again

by churchwatcher

“Jesus loves me — this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” This is a childish error?

Evangelical Christianity has a big problem, says Andy Stanley, and that problem is a reliance on the Bible that is both unwarranted and unhelpful. In a recent message delivered at North Point Community Church and posted online, Stanley identifies the evangelical impulse to turn to the Bible in our defense and presentation of Christianity as a huge blunder that must be corrected.

Some years ago, in light of another message Stanley preached at North Point, I argued that his apologetic ambition was, as we saw with Protestant liberalism a century ago, a road that will lead to disaster. No doubt, many Christians might be surprised to see an apologetic ambition identified as an entry point for theological liberalism, but this has held constant since Friedrich Schleiermacher, the father of modern theological liberalism, issued his book, On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers in 1799.

In the wake of the Enlightenment, Schleiermacher understood that the intellectual elites in Germany were already turning a skeptical eye to Christianity, if not dismissing it altogether. The Enlightenment worldview was hostile to supernatural claims, suspicious of any claims to absolute truth beyond empirical science, and dismissive of any verbal form of divine revelation.

No problem, Schleiermacher responded — we can still salvage spiritual and moral value out of Christianity while jettisoning its troublesome doctrinal claims, supernatural structure, and dependence upon the Bible. He was certain that his strategy would “save” Christianity from irrelevance.

His ambition, in other words, was apologetic at its core — to defend Christianity against claims of its eclipse. The formula offered by theological liberals is the same now. Save what you can of Christianity by surrendering truth claims. Acknowledge the inevitable hostility that these doctrines face in the modern age and adjust the faith accordingly. No theological liberal declares himself the enemy of Christianity. To the contrary, he offers liberalism as the only means of avoiding Christianity’s demise in a secular age.

Of course, the “Christianity” that remains after this doctrinal surgery bears little resemblance to biblical Christianity and, as Scripture makes abundantly clear, it cannot save.

Let’s be clear — Andy Stanley does not mean to deny the central truth claims of Christianity. In his message, “Who Needs God? The Bible Told Me So,” he affirms the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. But he does so while undercutting our only means of knowing of Christ and his resurrection from the dead — the Bible.

And he does so directly and without risk of misunderstanding. In his message he stated: “So I need you to listen really carefully and the reason is this — perhaps you were taught, as I was taught, ‘Jesus love me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.’ That is where our trouble began.”

That is where our trouble began? What trouble?

Stanley’s apologetic concern is clear from the beginning of this message. He identifies the crisis of “de-conversion” as adults leave the church because they have outgrown their child-like faith and no longer believe. He traces their de-conversion to the fact that their adult, “fact-based” questions were met with only childish, “faith-based” answers.

He goes on to say that the “the Bible told me so” is “one of the threads we hear in de-conversion stories all the time, and I have a feeling for many, many, many of you who are losing faith or have lost faith, especially in the Christian faith, this is a bit of the part of your story.”

Later, he follows by dismissing a “the Bible says it, that settles it” approach to Christianity. “The problem with that is this: if the Bible goes, so goes our faith.”

At this point, Stanley goes on to amplify his concern with a Bible-based Christianity. “If the Bible is the foundation of your faith, here’s the problem: it is all or nothing. Christianity becomes a fragile, house of cards religion.”

And, as he states boldly, “it is next to impossible to defend the entire Bible.”

In short order, Stanley argues that claiming infallibility for the entire Bible is a losing project. Furthermore, he argues that Christianity “made its greatest strides during the 282 years before the Bible even existed.”

There is more in that statement than can be unpacked in his message or in this essay, but the central problem with his argument is that he seems to believe that the church did not have the Bible until the early fourth century. This claim can only refer to the official listing of the canon of the New Testament, but it is clear that the early church recognized the Old Testament as Scripture and that the early church quickly had both the gospels and, even earlier, the letters of the Apostle Paul (see 1 Tim 5:18; 2 Pet 3:15-16).

Indeed, the early church provides abundant evidence of the “for the Bible tells me so” dependence upon Scripture, even if the earliest Christians did not yet have the collected New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul grounds both the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ as “according to the Scriptures.”

Perhaps the oddest part of Andy Stanley’s approach to defending the resurrection is his insistence that we have some access to historically verifiable accounts of the resurrection outside of the New Testament. He rests his confidence in recent historiographical work by apologists who defend the historicity of the resurrection by affirming historical sources that are prior to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

But where do these historians claim to find those sources? In the four gospels.

Stanley seems to base the defense of the resurrection in historical traditions he claims are prior to the gospels, but the Holy Spirit gave the church the four gospels, and the entire New Testament, as verbally inspired, authoritative, and infallible revelation. All of Scripture — the Old Testament and the New Testament — was given to the church so that we would know the rule of faith and everything revealed therein. This is the evangelical Scripture principle, and it is precisely what the Reformers defended as sola Scriptura.

And what is our alternative? Are we to believe that those who are “de-converting” from Christianity can be weaned off of the Bible and on to some other sufficient authority?

In the strangest turn, noted in Stanley’s presentations before this message, he argues that if we can somehow believe in the fact of Christ’s resurrection on the authority of prior historical sources, and then we find that Jesus (presumably as revealed in the four gospels) respects the inspiration of the Old Testament, we should conclude that if one who rose from the dead affirmed the inspiration of the Old Testament, then we should as well.

But Jesus actually pointed to the Old Testament and demonstrated the very approach to the truthfulness and authority of the Bible that Stanley identifies as the problem. When Jesus pointed to the Old Testament and said “these are they that testify of me” (John 5:39), he was effectively saying, “for the Bible tells me so.”

Add to this the problem that Stanley effectively refutes his own argument, undercutting the authority and inerrancy of the very Scripture that he would have us to understand that Jesus would want us to trust.

This is an apologetic disaster and would leave Christians with no authoritative Scripture. Instead, we would be dependent upon historians (among others) to tell us what parts of both testaments we can still believe.

Those parts will inevitably grow fewer and fewer. This is what must happen when the total trustworthiness, sufficiency, and authority of the Bible is subverted.

We are back with Friedrich Schleiermacher, trying to convince the “de-converted” of his day that Christianity can be retained as an intellectually defensible morality and spirituality without its central truth claims and doctrines.

Andy Stanley is no Friedrich Schleiermacher, but the path he charts for the church is a road to abject disaster.

In the end, we simply have no place to go other than the Bible as God’s authoritative revelation. Christ, not the Bible, is the foundation of our faith — but our only authoritative and infallible source of knowledge about Christ is the Bible.

A true defense of the Christian faith has never been more needed than now, but an attempt to rescue Christianity from its dependence upon Scripture is doomed to disaster.

We are left in the same predicament as Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms. If Scripture cannot be trusted, then we are doomed.

“Jesus loves me — this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” A mature Christian faith will say more than that, not less than that. “For the Bible tells me so” does not mean that we do not have reasoned answers to difficult questions, but it does mean that we admit our dependence upon Scripture — and that we confess that God intended for us to be dependent on Scripture.

“For the Bible tells me so” is not “where our trouble began.” To the contrary, it is right where God wants us.

Subtitle: Satan’s final deception for mankind could not have been possible were it not for his successful invasion of the Charismatic Church with actual White Magic Witchcraft, dressed up to look like Christianity, of course.

“Looking like a Christian Without Christian Theology”

The New World Order is coming! Are you ready? Once you understand what this New World Order really is, and how it is being gradually implemented, you will be able to see it progressing in your daily news!!

Learn how to protect yourself, your loved ones!

Stand by for insights so startling you will never look at the news the same way again.

The world is about to see the ultimate lie from Satan and his cohorts of world deception. An unholy trinity, with the devil posing as God, along with his false christ and false spiritual anointing, will produce a master lie, a lie so captivating and breathtaking that the very elect will reel with astonishment. This final lie must be the grandest thing that Satan has ever created. It will be his masterpiece of all time and eternity.

Apostle Paul spoke of this lie as he warned us about the coming “mystery of iniquity”. Along with describing this ultimate evil, he spoke of the “Restrainer” and His being “set aside” before this lie could materialize to its coming height. Read Paul’s words carefully.

“And now you know what is restraining him from being revealed at this time; it is so that he may be manifested (revealed) in his own appointed time. For the mystery of lawlessness (that hidden principle of rebellion against constituted authority) is already at work in the world, but it is restrained only until he who restrains is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one (the antichrist) will be revealed and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by His appearing at His coming.

The coming [of the lawless one, the antichrist] is through the activity and working of Satan and will be attended by great power and with all sorts of [pretended] miracles and signs and delusive marvels–[all of them] lying wonders– And by unlimited seduction to evil and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing (going to perdition) because they did not welcome the Truth but refused to love it that they might be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:6-11).

The Master Of This Lie

It’s very important that we understand the master of this lie. Antichrist is called the “mystery of iniquity“, but it is clearly stated that his “coming is after the working of Satan.”; he is a design of Satan in the similar sense that the Messiah or Christ was the “begotten of God.” In other words, Satan is about to produce a “false Christ” (Matthew 24:24) by using his “false anointing” resulting in the “greatest lie in human history.” Satan is an imitator and this will be his final imitation. A masquerading god, with a masquerading Christ accompanied by a masquerading False Prophet, will mesmerize the world.

Satan’s masquerading of this final lie will be accompanied with incredible miracles. The apostle stated that his coming will be “with all power and signs and lying wonders”. Satan is a powerful creature, second only to God Himself and he can produce paranormal happenings that will totally convince the unsuspecting. Notice that Paul called his activities, “lying wonders”. This clearly describes all the so-called miracles of Satan; they are not supernatural, but paranormal. God alone is supernatural (above or beyond nature. . . miraculous, spiritual – Chambers English Dictionary, W&R Chambers, Ltd, Edinburgh, 1990, p. 1474.), but Satan can only produce a paranormal (abnormal psychologically, not susceptible to normal explanation – Chambers English Dictionary, W & ft Chambers, LTD, Edinburgh, 1990, p. 1047.). Satan’s activities are nothing but clever tricks and masquerading lies that deceive. They appear to be supernatural, but under close scrutiny they are nothing but hidden lies. Yes, they will have the look of being supernatural, but they are distortions of reality.

Let us examine the incredible Satanic “lying wonders” planned to immediately precede the appearance of Antichrist.

“The Spirit of Peace is hovering close to humanity, seeking opportunity to make His Presence felt. The Spirit of Peace is not an abstract concept but a potent Individual, wielding forces hitherto unfamiliar to our planet. Great Forces are awaiting the hour when They can function as the Liberators and the Deliverers of mankind. But the door to Their entrance must be opened by humanity itself and it will be opened by a united act of the will, expressed through some formula of words and expressed in sound.” [“The Externalisation of the Hierarchy”, p. 173; Emphasis added]

Minutes before Antichrist arises, some seemingly supernatural sound will be heard, and spiritually felt, by everyone on the planet, simultaneously. At no other moment in world history will so many people be so devastatingly impacted at the same moment! This powerful sound is designed to get people looking outward and upward — even running out of office buildings to look skyward — to see what caused that heart-felt, soul-jarring sound. Images of Antichrist will appear all over the world simultaneously, speaking to each ethnic group in their own language. The true “Signs and Wonders” will have begun, and will be terribly impactful, leading many precious souls directly into Hell.

When this physical – spiritual “sound” hits, people’s souls will literally shake like a bowl of jelly. The Bible says that God is going to shake everything that can be shaken, so that those things which cannot be shaken will remain [Haggai 2:6, 21; Joel 3:16; Isaiah 13:13]. Too many Christians today are taking for granted that they will stand before the onslaught of the time of judgment when Antichrist shall finally arise. Too many Christians are so nonchalant about the appearance of Antichrist, that they may not be spiritually ready for the unbelievable, unprecedented soul-jarring experience. If you are not truly Biblically saved, if you are not righteous in Jesus’ Righteousness, and if you are not keeping a “short list” of daily sins committed, you may not be as protected against this unbelievable soul-jarring experience as you might believe. This is not the moment in world history to be a lukewarm, or “carnal” Christian!

Make no mistake about this fact: the very arising of Antichrist is God’s Judgment, the beginning of His most fearsome and furious judgments.

“And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie”. (2 Thessalonians 2:11). This lie” is a definite article or “THE Lie” by which he deceives the world. It is the ultimate lie. While Satan is the ‘Father of Lies” and every untruth originates with him, this lie is more. Satan is masterminding an unprecedented master lie that will continue to grow and escalate until it replaces the God of the Bible. It will also replace all dependency on absolute Biblical truth as we now know it with a new occult theology. Jesus Christ will be preached and presented as the same historical Jesus of church history, but with a “new paradigm” of understanding. The working of the Holy Spirit will undergo such a radical reinterpretation that there will be only vague similarity.

White Magic In The Church

I believe the false spiritual anointing now being manifested all around the world is the first step in producing this “final lie.” When you look closely at this false spiritual anointing permeating Charismatic Churches, it becomes abundantly clear that it is nothing but White Magic dressed up in a “christian” garb. All throughout Scripture, Satan is seen using white magic, i.e., using his power for the “benefit” of mankind. This has been a clever trick or deceptive tactic of the enemy of righteousness. Satan hides behind the difference between black magic and white magic. In producing both expressions of his dark nature, much of the world never sees his presence in the many expressions of White Magic. As has been often said, “White magic is the beautiful side of evil” A witch will argue you to the end that her white magic has nothing to do with Satan — she serves Lucifer, she insists! The truth is that White Magic is only beautiful to those who are deceived; unfortunately, these deceived will never realize this side of the White Throne Judgment Seat that they were serving Satan all along.

Look at the effort of Satan to deceive Jesus Christ during His forty days of fasting.

“Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cost thyself down. For it is written. He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in [their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy fool against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him’ (Matthew 4:5-11).

The Scripture then affirms that He was in the wilderness all forty days (Mark 1:12-13), that the devil left him in the wilderness when the temptation was finished (Matthew 4:11), and that Jesus returned from the wilderness in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:14). Yes, Satan had tempted Jesus from the pinnacle of the temple and from an exceeding high mountain during those same forty days. There can be little argument that the devil used his only paranormal powers (White Magic) to endeavor in this defeated effort to deceive the Son of God; how else could he show Jesus the kingdoms of the world to promise them to Him if He would only worship Satan?

Philip, the evangelist, faced off with White Magic in the eighth chapter of the Book of Acts, Simon the sorcerer was apparently experiencing a revival of religion in this city of Samaria, The writer Luke tells us all about Simon.

“But there was a man named Simon, who had formerly practiced magic arts in the city to the utter amazement of the Samaritan nation, claiming that he himself was an extraordinary and distinguished person. They all paid earnest attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that exhibition of the power of God which is called great (intense). And they were attentive and made much of him, because for a long time he had amazed and bewildered and dazzled them with his skill in magic arts.” (Acts 8:9-11; Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Bible Commentary)

His reputation in the city was, “This man is the great power of God.” Does that not sound strikingly familiar to our present host of new Charismatics?

White Magic In The First Testament

The Old Testament has many examples of different expressions of White Magic. Moses met these powers head-on as he dealt with Pharaoh of Egypt. The sorcerers of Pharaoh’s court could produce serpents with their enchantments.

“Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For they cast down every man his rod and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.” (Exodus 7:11-12).

In every case, the truth of God’s supernatural power was quick to judge and consume the devil’s substitute. All God needed was His man full of His Omnipotent Holy Spirit power to carry out the deed of judgment upon the White Magic practitioner.

The two sons of Aaron tried their skill in using White Magic in the tabernacle of Israel almost as soon as God had established the priesthood.

“And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, and put incense on it, and offered strange and unholy fire before the Lord, as He had not commanded them. And there came forth fire from before the Lord and killed them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, This is what the Lord meant when He said, I [and My will, not their own] will be acknowledged as hallowed by those who come near Me, and before all the people I will be honored. And Aaron said nothing.

Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Uzziel uncle of Aaron, and said to them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp. So they drew near and carried them in their undertunics [stripped of their priestly vestments] out of the camp, as Moses had said. And Moses said to Aaron and Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons [the father and brothers of the two priests whom God had slain for offering false fire], Do not uncover your heads or let your hair go loose or tear your clothes, lest you die also and lest God’s wrath should come upon all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord has kindled. And you shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die, for the Lord’s anointing oil is upon you. And they did according to Moses’ word. (Leviticus 10:1-7; Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Bible Commentary).

The very idea that Aaron’s sons — two of God’s anointed priests — would use Satan’s substitute before the altar of God Jehovah was grievous blasphemy and was met with God’s immediate deadly judgment. Fire from the Lord devoured them. Moses would not allow their father, Aaron, or their brothers to grieve over their death. They could not even leave the Tabernacle of God to attend the burial. My friends, it is a serious thing to call White Magic the work of the Holy Spirit! When you see Kenneth Hagin, Kenneth Copeland, and Benny Hinn performing with occult power and teaching occult doctrine, in the guise of Christianity, you can see the ultimate danger in which they are placing their very souls!

White Magic Transforms Satan’s Ministers

It’s overwhelmingly grievous to realize that Satan can transform himself and his ministers into powerful persons of remarkable charisma. We are not dealing with a back room filled with smoke, a witch’s brew, or some slight of hand magician. Black magic has always been an ugly thing that Satan used to paint a picture of how he wanted himself conceived. Then, he masquerades with his ‘beautiful” side so he can deceive and then damn the multitudes. White Magic has many forms, but false religion has always been its main expression. From Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, and Nimrod, the grandson of Noah, you can trace a line of White Magic straight to the New Age of our modern world.

We must now realize that paganism has gone mainstream in our Western Society. Satan’s “final lie” must take the “beautiful side of evil”, combine it with all the depths of its magical powers and then transform them into the theology of Apostate Protestant churches. Catholicism did this very thing during the early days of the third and fourth century. They are still teaching these doctrines of mixture. That’s why they can claim “miracles” by the thousands, apparitions of dead “saints”, holy water that supposedly chases away evil spirits, wafers “bleeding” with the very blood of Jesus, crying statues, etc. This same pagan spirit has invaded the Charismatic and Apostate Evangelical world.

Satan also set in place the worship of pagan goddesses that are equal in scope and powers to the Catholic Virgin Mary. The Dalai Lama bluntly told New Age author, China Galland, that the same spirit of “rangyung” who was producing the Madonna apparitions and miracles in America and Europe with the Virgin Mary was also producing the Madonna goddess miracles in China, Tibet, and India with the Hindu and Buddhist goddesses.

Here is Galland’s exact quote: “When I tell him [Dalai Lama] about the reports of the Blessed Mother appearing in the bark of trees in Poland, he concurs [with my initial impression that they are the same as with the Madonnas in China, Tibet, and India.] ‘Yes, that would be rangyung , the same thing as we have been talking about, of course, the same thing.’ ” [“Longing For Darkness”, China Galland, p. 93]

Doubt it not! The same demonic spirit that regularly produces these occult “miracles” in India and China is producing these “miracles” in the lands dominated by Roman Catholicism. White Magic is the power behind all these manifestations, and is setting up the peoples of the world for the final deception, the appearance of Antichrist.

Apostle Paul warned of this invasion of magic.

“For such men are false apostles [spurious, counterfeits], deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles (special messengers) of Christ (the Messiah). And it is no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light; So it is not surprising if his servants also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. But, their end will correspond with their deeds.” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15; Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Bible Commentary)

Notice clearly what the apostle warned us about. He said that Satan could transform himself to an angel of light. That word “transform” is a derivative of a powerful word, metarnorphoo. These two Greek words mean basically the same, except that metamorphoo is positive, while this same word in the Greek, metasehematizo, is negative. In the first word, as Apostle Paul used to describe being “born again and sanctified’ by the blood (Romans 12:1-2) it is a beautiful transformation. In this second word it is a transformation also, but for the purpose of disguising to deceive and change. Satan transforms himself by his magical powers to deceive and change mankind.

He likewise transforms his ministers. Read 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 again, meditatively. This fresh revelation to my heart changed the way I now understand “the final lie.” These ministers are actually transformed by magical powers and a confusion of reality into counterfeit “ministers of righteousness.” Steve Hill at Brownsville Assembly preaches almost every night on a counterfeit repentance of some description. Magical powers would be soundly rejected by most Pentecostals and Evangelicals unless they were clothed over with an apparent facade of “righteousness.” There were very few churches that followed alter the manifestations at Toronto until Toronto was sanitized by this “transformation” of Pensacola. Now, Pensacola has legitimized the white magic of Toronto by giving it an appearance of righteousness.

White Magic Will flatter Men Into Submission

As Daniel wrote his revelations of the future, he concluded them in chapters eleven and twelve to describe the very day in which we are living. He specifically spoke of the religious world and how Satan would deceive the people in the Latter Day church. He stated:

“And such as violate the covenant he shall pervert and seduce with flatteries, but the people who know their God shall prove themselves strong and shall stand firm and do exploits for God.” (Daniel 11:32; Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Bible Commentary).

The first step in spiritual deception is the light and careless treatment of God’s true covenant, the Holy Scripture. No one can be deceived until they take the Word of God lightly and handles it carelessly; this generation has fallen headlong into the new versions of a corrupted covenant. Now, Satan can do his intended work. He flatters them with his and his servant’s smooth words. This word “flattery” is a feminine form of smooth talk. It is actually a sensuous deception. In the Book of Revelation, John spoke of this very same spirit as the spirit of Jezebel.

In NEWS1841, we quote Paul and Jan Crouch, Kenneth Copeland and others as they speak the most blasphemous things imaginable about Jesus and His Holy Word; why, anyone who had even a minor amount of Scriptural knowledge would immediately get up out of their chair and walk out of the auditorium, or, if they are viewing this charade at home, would immediately turn the TV set off. But, no, these blasphemous people are applauded, admired as men of God, and are given money galore so they can build their palatial estates, their “Heaven on Earth”.

These blasphemies are clearly the work of Satan’s End of the Age deceptions.

Sensuousness Is At The Root Of The “Final Lie”

We are not fighting White Magic alone, but a sensuous form of White Magic. Sensuality in religious worship is how Nimrod made pagan religions so very captivating. Nimrod included in the temple worship: singers, dancers, and art forms to titillate the crowd with cross and/or sensuous dressing participants. The singing in most churches today has become the highest form of entertainment. Men and women alike dress to the fine points of showbiz excellence. The entire church world is being trivialized with singing that is appeals more to the eye, the body and the flesh than to God.

Religious rock music has also taken on a form of flesh and sensuousness that has absolutely no kin to Biblical worship.

Religion With A Sexy Dress

When you mix paranormal powers with slick entertainment, sensuous music that has a love song flavor and ministers that have been transformed into counterfeit “ministers of righteousness,” you have the making of a powerful movement We are still in the early stages of this development. White Magic has always been the favorite means of Satan’s deception and he is preparing a lie so incredible and so convincing that multitudes will be destroyed in their faith. Our modern technologies of communication have trained our current generation to respond to surface perceptions, clichés and glitzy presentation. It is the perfect vehicle for evil powers to use to present the false spiritual anointing and its white magic fanfare. When you add paranormal (Satan’s supernatural) activities to a fleshly display, watered down, twisted theology, and promotion by the biggest names in religious circles, you’ve got the power to convince a multitude!

Paranormal Activities Attributed To God

Many White Magic events being practiced in Charismatic Churches are now falsely being called “Signs and Wonders” from the Heavenly Father. We have documented some of the most insane behavior that is being called Holy Ghost impartations, manifestations. Already millions are accepting these activities. We Baptists just cannot believe that a person obviously under the control of the demonic host is being cheered by Charismatic pastors, their wives, and other church members, with everyone in attendance believing they were witnessing a manifestation of the Holy Spirit! What blasphemy! What unbelievable spiritual deception! Yet, this is the very same type of deception inherent in Antichrist; this type of deceptive spirit is the reason the people of the world will “rush in amazement and admiration” after Antichrist [Revelation 13:3]

We fear that such deluded Charismatics will be the ones who will be given the “strong delusion” that they cannot believe Biblical truth anymore. Listen:

“The coming of the lawless one, the antichrist, is through the activity and working of Satan and will be attended by great power and with all sorts of pretended miracles and signs and delusive marvels–all of them lying wonders– And by unlimited seduction to evil and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing (going to perdition) because they did not welcome the Truth but refused to love it that they might be saved. Therefore God sends upon them a misleading influence, a working of error and a strong delusion to make them believe what is false, In order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe in the Truth, but [instead] took pleasure in unrighteousness..” [2 Thessalonians 2:9-12; Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Bible Commentary]

Listen again to the pertinent warning: “God sends upon them a misleading influence, a working of error and a strong delusion to make them believe what is false, in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe in the Truth, but [instead] took pleasure in unrighteousness..”

As these poor, deluded souls shown on these various “Signs and Wonders” videos “take pleasure” in participating in the unrighteousness inherent in the White Magic they are practicing, if they continue such practice, God will send them a “strong delusion” to believe the lie of Antichrist so completely they can never see the truth to be saved!

Therefore, “… exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin … While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.” [Heb 3:13-15]

Resist the temptation to get mad at us for simply telling the truth; instead, open your spiritual eyes and hearts to this truth, so you may turn to be eternally saved.

Jesus Christ In A Burrito

Francis Frangipane publishes his acceptance of a number of White Magic manifestations and expresses his clear support of them. Here are his words from an edition of his River of Life Ministries,

“I feel that the Lord is accommodating these things, or at least some of them some of the time, but they are bewildering, to say the least. In fact, I’ve witnessed services where respected charismatic leaders stood silent and immobile like statues for hours. I thought, Isn’t this amazing? People who are usually so animated are acting like statues, while in Catholic church statues are acting like people.”

“Then there is the Ohio water tower that bore on its side the likeness of a portrait of Christ. Throughout the nation, news stations reported that sign-seekers by the hundreds of thousands caused massive traffic jams. And, let us not forget the burrito in Texas that, as it was fried, took on the supposed appearance of the face of Christ. It is now enshrined and producing ‘good fruit’ in many’ (River of Life Ministries, Vol 9. No 2. August, 1995, p2.)”

What can I say, except that we have now entered the prophesied time of deception unparalleled in church history.

The Final Lie Of Satan

We will certainly continue to report to you this exploding revival of white magic in the church. We believe it is the outpouring of Satan’s “Final Lie”. We will only see the first stages until the Rapture of the Bride and the removal of the “Restrainer.” Our text for this article made it clear that the ultimate expression of the “mystery of iniquity cannot be revealed until the “Restrainer is taken out of the way.” (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7). We must not allow this great Truth to blind us to deception that may well proceed the Rapture. We must prepare ourselves and every soul that will listen as we await His supernatural return. It will grow worse and worse and darker and darker.

The infallible Word of God, unspoiled by false human interpretations — obeyed and loved — is our anchor of the soul. Be careful that your “anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock” (Jesus Christ).

This great deception truly is a firm sign that we are in the End of the Age.

Are you spiritually ready? Is your family? Are you adequately protecting your loved ones? This is the reason for this ministry, to enable you to first understand the peril facing you, and then help you develop strategies to warn and protect your loved ones. Once you have been thoroughly trained, you can also use your knowledge as a means to open the door of discussion with an unsaved person. I have been able to use it many times, and have seen people come to Jesus Christ as a result. These perilous times are also a time when we can reach many souls for Jesus Christ, making an eternal difference.

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, but have been very lukewarm in your spiritual walk with Him, you need to immediately ask Him for forgiveness and for renewal. He will instantly forgive you, and fill your heart with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Then, you need to begin a daily walk of prayer and personal Bible Study.

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, but have come to realize His reality and the approaching End of the Age, and want to accept His FREE Gift of Eternal Life, you can also do so now, in the privacy of your home. Once you accept Him as Savior, you are spiritually Born Again, and are as assured of Heaven as if you were already there. Then, you can rest assured that the Kingdom of Antichrist will not touch you spiritually.

If you would like to become Born Again, turn to our Salvation Page now.

We hope you have been blessed by this ministry, which seeks to educate and warn people, so that they can see the coming New World Order — Kingdom of Antichrist — in their daily news.

Finally, we would love to hear from you.

March 13: Daniel Iverson & the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church

The following is drawn from an autobiography written by the Rev. Daniel Iverson, founding pastor of the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church in Miami, Florida. That church closed its doors some years ago, but the legacy lives on.

The Shenandoah Presbyterian Church in its first twenty-four years under Daniel Iverson grew from seventeen worshipers in an old dance hall (half of them Iversons) to 1664 members with a Sunday School of 1200.  150 went into full-time Christian ministries, 4000 persons made a public profession of faith joining Shenandoah and her missions in this period, and some twenty-one churches were founded through Shenandoah and its pastor, together with its “children and grandchildren.  With the vast shift of population, seventy five years later, the Calle Ocho Church began to replant the church, “Reformed according to the Word of God” in the heart of what is now known as “Little Havana.” This autobiographical sketch in Dan Iverson’s own words best explains the miracle of Shenandoah. It is a simple answer.  Obviously, God did it!

The Work Begins: Sweating in Miami

iversondaniel01In February, 1927, Mrs. Iverson and I began to visit from home to home in the Southwest section of the city to see about prospects.  The people were in such an unsettled condition due to the collapse of the business boom and the terrible hurricane, it looked like a hopeless task. We were greeted with more or less indifference. We did not have a place to worship, and did not know where we could secure such a place; but we felt it was God’s will that we should work as though everything would work out alright, trusting Him every step of the way.

We found some people suspicious, charging that we had an ax to grind.  We found some very receptive and interested, and that most of them had heartaches they were trying to hide.  Having had some experience with people (Dan was about thirty eight years old), we felt it was our duty to penetrate the crust that hid the real self, and be of comfort and service to those in distress.

Having felt it was the time to start the church in the Shenandoah  community, I put notices in the newspapers, inviting those who were interested in establishing a Presbyterian Church to visit us in our home on a Tuesday evening in late February. About eight people attended that meeting, but only one became a member of what is now known as the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church.

After visiting for several weeks, we had interested enough folks, we thought, to jusify our finding a place of worship. There was an apartment on the corner of Southwest 20th Avenue and 12th Street that had stores on the ground floor.  We thought that was the place to begin, and tried to secure one of the stores. The owner of the building said that if we could gain the consent of those in the apartment building, we could use the store for a short time.  After four days, we had the people’s consent, but then the owner of the building decided against it. This was discouraging, for we had tried several places and met with similar rebuffs.

On Tamiami Trail and 20th Avenue there was a wooden building, now very much dilapidated, but then being used as a dance hall. It did not look to be the right thing to start a church in a Dance Hall. I found the building open, and walked in to take a look, and found it ideal as a Tabernacle.  I felt God had led me to this place. There was a little orchestra stand in the center of the building, and I knelt down behind the stand and claimed the building for God, and as I knelt and prayed, I felt God had answered my prayers.  I did every thing I could to secure this building, but failed.  Yet I felt in my heart that it would finally be ours.

I kept looking around the area and found an open air theater, now known as the Trail Auto Parts Company, that had closed its doors as a moving picture concern. I felt it was an unwise move to begin, but feeling it was imperative, I was ready to accept anything.  I secured this building for ten dollars per Sunday, and did not have the ten dollars to pay it.

That week, having  printed ten thousand invitation cards, my two boys, Dan and Ned, and my little girl Ella Lillian, went with me and assisted me in placing under the doors of 1000 homes these cards.  This interested them in the venture, and I found in family prayers they were constantly remembering this effort before God. Having given out one thousand cards, they thought everyone would respond and expected to see a large gathering on that first Sunday, March 13, 1927 at the Kew Garden Theater.

We advertised the Bible School hour at 9:45 A.M. I painted a sign and placed it outside the door, and opened up at 9:00 AM. There were five from our own family present,  At 9:45 there were still just five present, and that was a matter of anxiety for us all. As we were beginning with just our family at five minutes of ten, one person strolled in and asked if this was the place for the service, and wondered where the crowd was. At five minutes after ten, there were possibly ten present, and by 10:15 AM we had our first Sunday School of seventeen people divided into three classes. These classes were led by Mrs. Jennie Anderson, and for the adults  a class by Mrs. Daniel Iverson, and one by Miss Alice France.

shenandoahPCThe open air theater had a concrete floor and sunshine rules very strongly in Miami in March. It was unbearably warm and the glare very hard on the eyes. We found we were laboring under tremendous hardships. After a brief Sunday School session of the three classes, we asked the people to stay for church, and we would not keep them long.  Some people were added to the eleven o’clock service, making the attendance perhaps twenty-five or thirty. The sun was so hot that the people complained about it.  I suggested we hold a short service and someone suggested that they go home and get their parasols and come back.  I was afraid that if I let them go, they would not come back. They were so nice and kind, I gave them their wish and everyone  came back. This was just a little thing, but that was an encouraging thing, and I needed that little encouragement at what seemed to be a very dark moment in the blazing sun.

We had no hymn books, but I found a friend from my home town that was kind enough to make a couple hundred copies of three hymns. We used those hymns for a number of weeks for we had no funds with which to purchase hymn books.  During the following weeks I felt it necessary to get another place of worship, but found it impossible to secure them. So I printed one thousand more cards and with some neighbor children and my own, we placed cards under the doors again. I know we were not as welcome as we ought to have been, but I overlooked that, and went on. In spite of the handicap of a very uncomfortable place, we had a slight increase of both Bible School and Church. On these cards we suggested that people bring their parasols, and they did. We prayed earnestly that God at that time would answer the prayers for the dance hall.  Another week went by with the same disappointment and fear, but again, there was a slight increase in attendance.

Words to Live By:
When the Lord has a work to do, He prepares the way. Nothing will prevent or hinder the accomplishment of His will. It will happen in His time. Our role is to watch, and to faithfully obey, as He leads. The Gospel must be proclaimed. God will do the rest.

September 19: The Benefit of Affliction

How can we find benefit in times of affliction, frailty and illness? For one, the Lord can use such times to “teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Ps. 90:12). There is the means—affliction, but note also the purpose—to apply our hearts unto wisdom, and also the method—teaching us to number our days. When we are well and prospering, it is so easy to rely upon our own efforts and to forget God. But He would have us to redeem the time, for the days are evil. (Eph. 5:16). Our Lord would have us to remember Him daily—constantly—to live our lives resting upon Him for all that we are and have.
The following material comes from
THE NEW YORK OBSERVER, a 19th-century Presbyterian newspaper. The PCA Historical Center has a modest collection of these newspapers, and these two articles recently caught my eye.

“Words of a Childless Widow on the Benefit of Affliction.”

[excerpted from The New York Observer, 18.38 (19 September 1840), p. 1, columns 4-5.]

My husband died, and then disease seized on my children, and they were taken one by one. In the course of a few years, I had lain those in whom my heart was bound up, in the grave. Oh! They were many, many bitter tears that I shed. The world was dark. The very voice of consolation was a pain. I could sit by the side of my friend, but could not hear him speak of my departed ones. My affliction was too deep to be shared. It seemed as if God himself had deserted me. I was alone. The places at the table and the fireside remained—but they who filled them were gone. Oh the loneliness, as it had been a tome, of my chamber. How blessed was sleep! For then the dead lived again. They were all around me. My youngest child and last, sat on my knee—she leaped up in my arms, she uttered my name with infant joyousness; and that sweet tone was as if an angel had spoken to my sad soul. But the dream vanished, and the dreary morning broke, and I waked and prayed—and I sought forgiveness even while I uttered it for my unholy prayer—prayed that God would let me lie down in the grave side by side with my children and husband.

But better thoughts came. In my grief I remembered that though my loved ones were separated from me, the same Father—the same Infinite Love, watched over them as when they were by my fireside. We were divided, but only for a season. And by degrees my grief grew calmer. But since then, my thoughts have been more in that world, where they have gone, than in this. I do not remember less, but I look forward and upward more. I learned the worth of prayer and reliance. Would that I could express to every mourner how the sting is taken away from the grief of one, who with a true and full heart puts her trust in God. I can never again go into the gay world. The pleasures of this world are no longer pleasures to me. But I have trust and hope and confidence. I know that my Redeemer liveth. I know that God ever watches over his children. And in my desolation, this faith of the heart has long enabled me to feel a different kind of pleasure indeed, but a far deeper, though more sober joy, than the pleasures of this world ever gave me even when youth, and health, and friends all conspired to give them their keenest relish.

‘You have learned in your own heart,’ I said, ‘that all trials are not evils.’

It was with eyes up-turned to heaven, and gushing over with tears, not tears of sorrow, but gratitude, and with a radiant countenance, that she answered, in a tone so mild, so rapt, as if her heart were speaking to her God,—‘It has been good for me that I have been afflicted.’

D Hall on Modern Day Montanism – A Critique of the Charismatic Movement

Whether you hold to cessationism or continuationism, sound theology matters. In this lecture you will hear a clear presentation exposing an ancient heresy invading Christianity today.

“JD Hall recently spoke at the NorCal Fire conference in California. The following is audio from his sermon, Modern Day Montanism. This is a critique of the charismatic movement, and defends the doctrine of Cessationism, particularly in regards to new prophecy.”
